At least 23 people have died following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall that hit Nairobi on the night of Friday, March 6, according to the National Police Service (NPS).

Police said the intense rainfall triggered widespread flooding across several parts of the city, leading to loss of life, destruction of property, and major disruption to road transport.

Authorities confirmed that emergency response teams managed to rescue 29 people from different areas during search and rescue operations conducted together with other responding agencies. The rescued individuals are currently receiving assistance.

Several neighbourhoods were among the hardest hit by the floods, including Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B, South C, Pipeline in Embakasi, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, and parts of Westlands. Floodwaters swept through homes and informal settlements in these areas, forcing some residents to evacuate.

The flooding also caused significant disruption on major roads across Nairobi. Affected routes included sections of Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road, where rising water levels made movement difficult for motorists and pedestrians.

Police said search and rescue operations are still ongoing, with response teams continuing to assist affected communities and respond to distress calls.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue, advising the public to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to avoid further incidents.
