Five fishermen lost their lives on Sunday evening after their boat capsized on Lake Victoria near the Dho-Goye area in Usigu Sub-County. According to John Ochieng’, chairman of the Usenge Beach Management Unit, seven men were aboard the vessel when strong winds caused it to overturn.
“The boat was suddenly hit by rough winds, and it capsized almost immediately,” Ochieng’ said. Rescue efforts managed to save one person, who clung to the overturned boat until help arrived.
Authorities say search teams are still working to recover the remaining victims. Two bodies have already been retrieved and taken to Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital’s mortuary, while the search continues for the others. Local officials are urging fishermen to exercise caution amid worsening weather conditions on the lake.
