Allies of Kithure Kindiki have warned Oburu Odinga against pushing for the Deputy President’s seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting that the position is neither vacant nor open for political bargaining.

The leaders, drawn largely from the Mt Kenya region and aligned to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), said the seat currently held by Prof Kindiki must be respected and should not feature in any coalition negotiations involving the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking after a consultative meeting, the leaders maintained that any suggestion that the Deputy President’s position could be negotiated in future political arrangements was misplaced. They argued that Prof Kindiki, as the incumbent, remains firmly in office and continues to serve within the broad-based government.

Among those who publicly backed the Deputy President were Geoffrey Ruku, Eric Mugaa and Cecily Mbarire. The leaders pledged to mobilise political support across the region to safeguard what they termed as Mt Kenya’s strategic leadership position in government.

The meeting brought together dozens of elected and grassroots leaders who resolved to convene again to consolidate their position and coordinate political strategy ahead of 2027.

The remarks follow public statements attributed to Mr Odinga suggesting that ODM could stake a claim to the Deputy President’s seat in future political realignments. However, Kindiki’s allies dismissed the proposal, saying other avenues of cooperation remain open but the No. 2 office is not up for discussion.

The latest exchange signals early political jostling as parties begin positioning themselves for the next General Election.
